Older reluctant readers are usually resistant because the stories they are required to read have vocabulary beyond their comprehension. This eventually leads to reluctant chapter readers who say they cannot "get into" a book because there are no pictures to give context. I try to find a happy medium, by having them create their own comic strip. For a week I introduce comic books that are for their age group and have them read and find words that they do not fully understand. At the end of the week they have a list of words, with these words we create a vocabulary web using pictures, a dictionary and context clues. By using these differing resources they will have a strong grasp of what each word means. Once we have the definitions I ask them to make a comic strip using the words learned. This activity is engaging and fun and helps increase vocabulary skills.
