What is the first feelings of love to most teens (or adults) but a constant rumble of fear, secrecy, confession and apprehension. Troilus and Criseyde (the Chaucer version of course) is a tale of love and the secrecy that is needed surrounding the confession of it. In Troilus and Criseyde love is needed to be kept secret for numerous reasons; fear and honor the predominant. The story questions the layered issue of: What is love and why does it feel that it needs to be secret?
A Young Adult novel that is also rife with secrecy and love amiss is Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, sometimes a required reading for high school students. The main characters, Catherine and Heathcliff circle around love, honor and secrecy. Sometimes a person can be explicit but still hold the secret to their true sentiments, something that happens plenty of times for these two tragic characters.
