Chaucer is known for plenty of things but a theme in most of his poetry is the retelling of classic stories. Here are two classic retellings by modern authors:
Toni and Slade Morrison's Who's Got Game? The Ant or the Grasshopper? is a hip hop inspired retelling of Aesop's Fables set in an urban city. It focuses on Foxy G and Ace Kid A and the question of is art "work" and role reversal when one refuses to help the other. A beautiful collaboration between mother and son.
Belzhar by Meg Wolitzer
Is a retelling of Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar. Jam suffers from depression following the 'death' of her boyfriend and her parents send her to The Wooden Barn, a therapeutic boarding school. Once there she discovers she is signed up for a Special Topics English course, where for the entire semester they will read The Bell Jar, but it extends far beyond that. Fantastical, heartbreaking, and frustrating are the three words I thought of when I read the last page.
